15 ways we’ve all struggled to cope with our partner’s ex girlfriend

Soooooo, last week, I was walking out of a restaurant, minding my own business…. It was a beautiful Brooklyn evening, with birds chirping and cars rumbling down the street. Our final breakup had actually been the impetus for starting Cup of Jo, as a way to distract myself in the evenings from all the complicated feelings. Riding his bike, he pulled up to the sidewalk to say hello. Personally, I would keep biking like my life depended on it.

Or duck behind a car? Maybe it depends on your personality. So, on with the story: My face turned bright red and I gave him the most awkward one-armed hug in hug history.

Alex shook his hand. A catalog of thoughts ran through my brain: How do I look? What is Alex thinking? Is my smile remotely normal? My ex said he was heading to Frankies.

I managed to pronounce some words about how we had just been. There was an awkward silence while we all stood around and I imagined sinking slowly into the ground. Then he said goodbye and headed off. What is it about ex run-ins that turns you from a normal, reasonably articulate adult into a bumbling, sweaty non-person?

In the end, the weirdness lasted only 30 seconds, and we all went back to our lives. Alex and I headed home, hand in hand, to have salted caramel ice cream and read in bed and debate whether he should stop moving his toes. And that, my friends, was that. How was it? Where were you? I want to hear everything! I live in Norway and my Mom sat one row behind my ex while coming to visit me from Texas a few years ago the flight had a layover in London where he was going for business.

He recognized her voice and said hello and then accompanied her into the terminal once the plane landed. Maybe I should be ashamed of this, but sometimes on my visits home, I book that same flight back in the hopes that he might be on a business trip again. For me, the beautiful thing about time is that whatever went wrong for us has dissipated and I only remember the good things and what made us click so well. Maybe it depends in how things ended, but I am friends with my exs and I have so much affection for them.

I am really happy to see them, I want to know how they are doing, I wish them well. Whoever you both were back then, you are not anymore. Everyone is just doing their best at which ever you are in life… The past is in the past and whoever you are meeting today is someone you shared a chapter with, but someone that will have changed. But as you say, maybe some people just get really shy after such intoimacy. I was dating someone new my senior year of college and we stumbled into his dorm elevator after a dinner and several glasses of wine.

Being all newly-together and tipsy, our PDA game was strong and we thought that we were basically alone … the elevator door was closing, but I glimpsed the stunned face of my absolutely horrible ex-boyfriend in the elevator mirror.

We had broken up only a few months before. Needless to say I let the door close and so did he. But also! The comments are priceless! We walk right in, and facing us — at a booth, by herself — is my ex. Sitting there. Eating nachos. Day Drunk. We are facing each other so there is no room to back out of the restaurant. We were both married, and he propositioned me!!!

I just hung up on him. I would definitely hide if I saw him now! What a jerk. This was 20 years ago but I am cringeing here so hard typing this.

They always say you should dress like you might be hit by a car but my new mantra might be to always dress as if you might, just might, run into an ex at the shopping centre. I drank a lot of margaritas that day and no longer attend his birthday parties. I ran into an ex in Target. He had invited me to his wedding, which I debated attending up until an hour before the event. I was happy for him but also devastated. Our relationship had been a close friendship for him and first love for me.

Anyway, he loved ice cream so I sent them a fancy ice cream scoop and a super nice card. And then realized someone else had purchased the scoop for them already. What was he doing in Target? He turned a nice shade of crimson when we nearly collided in the aisle.

I am fairly certain he was returning the my extra scoop! For the record, I was dressed cute and had just won a fellowship. So that helped because when he asked what I was up to, I had an answer I felt proud of.

It was on the lower east side and he was not one to leave Long Island. Yup, it was. In the first place, his ex you is writing an article about him! Fast forward a few weeks and at a game my high school boyfriend LTR- dated 6 months walks by and goes straight up to my hubby to chat. We exchange shocked hellos and my husband asks how we know each other. To this day my son will tease me about how I dated the Dad of a kid on his team.

I was training for my first marathon after a massive heartbreak. We were together for over 5 years. I was at the end of a 15 mile run when I turned a corner and almost ran into my ex and his new girlfriend now his wife walking out of a cafe. I once thought I saw an ex across the road and was starting so intently I walked straight into a lamp post really hurting my face! Turned out it was his twin! I swear every ambitious woman is the product of a not happy relationship. Looks like things worked out for the best.

I have two: first, my BIG first love and I had broken up and it was really sad and a bit angry and just a dramatic epic breakup. Anyway my girlfriends knew I was depressed and sweetly took me out for a drink, which turned into many hours of drinks heading straight into breakfast oh to be young again. We nursed black coffees in the diner booth with party dresses and limp curls and smudged eye makeup — and in walks my big first love with his parents and sits down in the booth next to us.

Only the presence of my girls got me through. Second one was that I went on a date with a guy in high school, we kissed and it was so slimy and awful I ignored him from then on — I eventually did have to speak to him 12 years later when we went to see our new mortgage broker — him! He refers to her brother as his brother and her mother is basically the only mother figure he has since he is estranged from his own mother.

The first time I was very nervous and felt pretty awkward. But luckily they are such lovely people and I ended liking them a lot. The ex-brother has even vacationed with my family!

And the mother kind of feels like a low-stakes mother-in-law. I just had another memory! About ten years ago, my husband and I went on a double date with his ex-girlfriend their relationship was casual and short-lived from when they were young teenagers and her partner with whom she was separated they have children together.

This has happened to me twice two different exes since getting married, both times I was with my husband and our kids! I have no answers, just empathy. I turned into a babbling idiot that left everyone ex, kids, husband very confused! I am always a little weird about running into my exes, but less and less the older I get. My current relationship is in a rocky patch, though, and in my low points I imagine how awkward it will be if we break up and then run into each other, which we will all the time.

We sit down and there across the aisle is my senior year boyfriend. Come to find out she had invited several of her exes to her wedding day! As for me, I initially ducked behind friends to recover from the shock and pull myself together.

At the reception we had a quick, you-look-great-best-wishes convo and then I proceeded to thoroughly enjoy the dancefloor with my college girlfriends and wonderful man. He mostly sat at a table alone. Happiness is the best revenge. Last Saturday, I laid down my blanket in Central Park, and when I sat up from my sunbathing, I realized my ex was on the next blanket over.

I always thought I would say hi if I ever ran into him, but I completely froze and tried to ignore his presence.
