SS20, it seems, is all about wearing shorts that look like, well, silky smooth boxer shorts. The best could be found in shirting fabrics matched with button placket vests at Prada, satins at Kiko Kostadinov, Versace and Giorgio Armani, and floaty light cottons at E Tautz and Fendi.
A high-summer, weekend-only trend, this. At 24s. For SS20 your sandals should be chunkier and more remedial looking than ever. The trend continued in Paris, with folksy, thrown-together sandals shown at Lanvin and Loewe, and chunky trainer-esque styles at Hermes. The best cargo pants to be found in Paris were billowing and workwear-inspired at Lanvin and Louis Vuitton; chic and close cut at Wooyoungmi and Dries van Noten.
Other excellent examples could also be found imbued with a punky edge at Charles Jeffrey and Marni. The Sheer trend was everywhere in Paris, too. From Organza bomber jackets and shirts at Dior and multi-layered tulle overshirts and cargo pants at Louis Vuitton, to the see-through vests at Dries van Noten, the look was as sexy as it was soft. At ssense. The bigger you wear yours, we reckon, the better. At farfetch. Over the past few summer seasons the co-ord basically a matching pairing of shorts and short-sleeved shirt has become the go-to fashion summer get-up.
Perhaps it was something to do with the rising heat in Paris, but vests were on pretty much every runway in the French capital. There were satin styles at Lanvin, oversized and drapey sleeveless wonders at Loewe and body-contouring, sexed up vests at Dries. Now, for SS20, a few of the more dynamic tailoring styles are making a comeback.
In this case? Pin stripes were big news in Paris, too. There were ultra-skinny pin stripe suits at Celine; drapey, sporty pin stripe tracksuit suits at Paul Smith and body-con futuristic pin stripe suits at Balmain, to boot.
Masculine yet soft, think of your new rugby shirt as the safety blanket of your grown-up wardrobe. Oh, and the more clashing colours that feature in your rugby shirt, the better.
The key pieces? Field jackets, safari jackets and field-safari hybrids. Likewise, the new trend towards extreme double-breasted tailoring, which sees plenty of excess fabric wrapped around the body like a shroud, might have something to do with the Tailleur Oblique suits Kim Jones showed in his first collection for Dior.
In Paris, Dunhill, Balmain, Dior and Dries Van Noten all showed a take on the extra-double breasted trend, and the look felt both chic and neat.
A sharp-shouldered, black leather biker jacket is the ultimate mark of a rebellious and on-point wardrobe. This trend is best worn out in elegantly cut suiting, as was so elegantly demonstrated at Italian tailoring powerhouse Zegna, Ferragamo, Canali and Brioni.
Animal print made a surprise return to the runways last season in the shape of shaggy leopard-print coats at Versace and full-on jaguar suits at Philipp Plein. The animal print trend continued in earnest in Paris too, from zebra stripe coats at Sacai to leopard print bomber jackets at Celine. Defined by a double-breasted construction with a shallower wrap than usual, the style works particularly well worn open, making it perfect for summer.
Denim had a major resurgence in both Paris and Milan. Most commonly worn in the form of double denim two pieces - think patchwork denim jeans and donkey jackets at Versace, and denim suits at Loewe - the look was less Marlborough Man at the weekend, more Stonewall protestor storming Haight Ashbury in the seventies.
The best takes on the look could be found at Celine, where a bell bottom denim jean and jacket combo felt rakish and cool, also notable was a tasseled denim worker jacket, fisherman jean and denim shirt look at Valentino. The reality, however, is that done properly, a pair of leather trousers can look both chi-chi and chic. The best leather trousers at the shows were cut loose, rather than tight, and were shown in shades of brown hermes , grey Louis Vuitton , midnight blue Lanvin as well as the usual black everywhere else.
There was a general move toward punky, homespun, messed with fashion at the menswear shows this season. Leading the charge was artist Sterling Ruby, whose inaugural collection featured a host of bleach-splattered denim jackets and overdyed two pieces.
At Versace, patchwork bleached shorts and donkey jackets paid homage to the late Keith Flint, while at Ermenegildo Zegna and Dior the look was more refined, with liquid colours bleeding through cotton co-ords and organza bombers respectively.
