Travelling alone in NY. How can I meet people? - New York City Forum

I'm a 22 year-old danish girl. I'm planning a trip to New York in July. I'm planning on staying for 3 weeks, and so far I've booked my first week at HI hostel near central park on Amsterdam. I would really love to experience the city of course, but i'm also hoping to meet some people to hang out with. Any advices on that? Is there any websites where you can get in touch with people travelling to NY? I'm very independent, but three weeks in NY would be a bit boring if I'm not gonna get to now any people at all.

You will always meet people in the hostels ,you can make a Pub Crawl or something like that too. I agree with what's been said. You are going to meet a lot of other fellow travelers at the Hostel.

And sitting at the bar in a restaurant or bar is a good way to meet and chat to people. I've then gone on to travel around and visit sites with these people.

The usual common sense precautions apply. My experience in Denmark is that because everyone there feels connected as the "Danish People" you usually always feel safe around everyone. This is true of most European countries; everyone feels related to each other as a people, and they are often on their "almost-best" behavior.

This is doubly true in a small, happy country like Denmark. New York City has more people than your entire country. And if you include the suburban areas, there are as many people as in all of Scandinavia, in a place the size of Belguim. Not everyone is on his best behavior; beware of guys who are trying to talk you into "just" going to their apartment for smoking stuff and fulfilling their wildest hopes and dreams to be polite about it.

Not that that is a common problem, just slightly more likely than in Kobnhaven. Just have your danger radar on, but no need to be paranoid about it. I'd try to meet people through the hostel or a site like the one recommended above or by attending an event at one of the universities or at the Library or museum.

Not to be paranoid, but if you were my daughter, I'd tell you not to eat at the bar alone. You will definitely meet someone but who knows what kind of person he might be? If you do go ahead and meet someone at a bar, I'd recommend not saying you're all alone in the US staying at a hostel.

Also don't let anyone keep buying you drinks. If you had friends with you, it would be different. You could look out for each other.

Sorry to be a downer but I'd say the same thing about any city in the US. It's great to be friendly but you want to protect yourself too, especially so far from home. I would urge caution when at bars by yourself. If you are meeting new people, I would also not disclose that you are traveling alone either.

I would try to join a couple of walking tours perhaps to meet other travelers. You can learn different dances while meeting people there. And never leave your drink unattended at the bar! If you need to use the restroom, either take your drink with you or get a fresh one when you return to the bar.

I agree with the suggestions to take a walking tour of some kind and to look into some of the meetup. I don't think there's anything wrong with a 22 yr old eating in a restaurant bar or bar alone! I'm not talking about iffy dive bars. There are a lot of nice bars and bars in restaurants. Sometimes it's even extra safe because frequently bartenders feel protective of their customers and keep their eye on you and do intervene if someone gets out of line.

I've even had bartenders tell someone to back off just because they were invading my 'space'. As said, use the proper cautions. I've been traveling alone since I was 16 to Europe at first and after 21 through the US and other countries. Use the proper caution.

If I didn't see it poured and I don't know the person so I won't accept it. And it doesn't have to be alcoholic. I only take a drink that I know the bartender pours if I'm sitting at the bar.

If at a bar table only if I order it and a waitperson brings it to me. I have accepted a drink when someone who has offered to buy one for me. But, only when we've been having a normal conversation and it looks like we'll be continuing to talk to each other for awhile. I have never had anyone expect something from me other than conversation. I have also politely said 'no thank you' to other offers if it didn't feel right or if I knew I wasn't going to stay much longer.

And most importantly I've never accepted from someone who has obviously had too much to drink. You want to stay clear of those people. I also never, ever leave my drink unattended. I either take it with me if I use the restroom or as I have on several occasions handed it to the bartender especially a female one and asked for her to hold it behind the bar until I get back.

As far as telling people you are alone or not - in my experience it depends. Many people don't ask so there's no need to volunteer it. I've met fellow women travelers in different US cities that I have told I was alone and we've gone on to do some sites and meals together on many occasions. One year I met a married couple in Lincoln , England and we saw some sites and had a couple of meals together. I told them that when I was leaving I was going to Paris and they ended up deciding to meet me there because they were afraid to go to a non-English speaking country alone for the first time.

I helped them get an overview of Paris and they went on to do some things on their own. So you can meet people and spend time with them using common sense. Also, I have never gone into someone's hotel room or a locals apartment or house. I would recommend that you don't either. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Over the weekend, Cohen sent the modern-day equivalent of a message in a bottle: he flew a drone with his phone number from his balcony to someone on a neighboring rooftop in order to avoid breaking the social distancing efforts imposed by the coronavirus. But it turns out that was not the case. Cignarella, who helps manage a co-working space in the city, was a few days into remote work and remaining at home in her apartment with her roommate. Cohen, who is a freelance photographer who regularly shoots for events like music festivals, had been keeping to himself in his apartment since the start of the week; he lives alone. Cohen is even working on a photo project of the scene. At some point while Cignarella was dancing, Cohen waved at her.

In order for today's children to succeed as adults, they need a solid foundation of life skills inculcated at a young age. Social studies is key to building this critical knowledge, yet less attention is being paid to social studies in elementary schools as this subject becomes more essential.
