Lanza is a stellar lead, and the ensemble work here is also exceptionally strong. A promising American musical isn't born every minute. Heck, whole years go by without anything approximating the arrival of a melodious blessed event… Treated to a slick, skillful staging by Eric Schaeffer, [ Meet John Doe ] is a rewarding platform for a pair of talented young songwriters and a knockout of a leading lady named Heidi Blickenstaff… Composer Andrew Gerle and lyricist Eddie Sugarman, who also collaborated on the show's book, conjure in this populist musical fable a Depression-era America as desperate for a decent public man as it is for a buck… the score, ably served by Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations — a piece band sits on a bridge over the stage — is filled with clever lyrics and bright and supple melodies… On the nervy shoulders of Ann, the plot must be carried, and Blickenstaff is more than up to it. She's a dynamite successor to the movie's Barbara Stanwyck: It's a star performance, in fact. There's an effortless kind of kick to Blickenstaff's readings of Ann's sharp-elbowed lines. And she can sing, to boot… Ford's, too, deserves applause for taking a chance on this material. Some other major companies in town seem content these days to feast on well-cooked chestnuts. Theatergoers can only hope that this historic theater and its ambitious management will set off on another adventure of this magnitude soon.

Since it played at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut last fall, in a developmental production with a largely different cast, Gerle and Sugarman have added four new songs, rewritten or removed several others, and changed characters and scenes. The music is pleasantly melodic and occasionally brash, and the story is simple but affecting.

Fabricated news stories, populist heroes spun out of thin air, media manipulation of the masses by cynical moguls—and a down and out populace looking for any flicker of hope to lead them. Everything old is new again. Porchlight could not have picked a timelier musical.

He becomes a citywide sensation, and Ann hires an out-of-work baseball pitcher, John Willoughby, to play John Doe. Ann gets her job back by ghostwriting columns for him. Both the lyrics and music by Andrew Gerle and Eddie Sugarman capture the era in which the plot is set, recreating s and s Americana with an enchanting precision. Whether swaying or dizzying, the music swings with a familiarity that is both comforting and intriguing.

John Doe sells papers and so they plan to find a someone to pretend to be John Doe and figure that when the time is up, they will find a way to get out of the creation of this character.

Clements where Meet John Doe , the new lush and jazzy s-era musical is playing. Based on the Frank Capra film of the same name, Meet John Doe is far from perfect, but given a festival that has presented its fair share of satiric and parodic shows, how refreshing it is to see a work that is decidedly smart and serious.
