I purchased three copies: Kindle plus hard cover editions for friends. Jesse dares to say what others may have thought but didn't dare express. He's smart about sex and its value in making a man what he becomes. Buy it, and be glad about your personal sexual history.

Diana Blomgren Alpharetta, GA. As a Urologist, I thought that I knew all there was to know about men. Thanks to the authors of this book, I have learned so much more. It's rare that men get together and talk about these type of issues- most of us run out of things to say after we talk about our favorite sports team and the car we want to buy.

It is so important as individuals and, especially at times like these, that we define for ourselves and for our children, what it really takes to be a Good Man. This book breaks down our roles as Fathers, Husbands, Workers, etc and tells amazing stories of people that either are good men or figured out how to become one. We need these examples. We need to see that it is possible to fail initially, but succeed in the end.

We need to show ourselves and our children that we get "it. Fame and fortune are so far down the list of what's important. If you need to have that lesson retold to you, this is the book. Good men come from all walks of life and we all have it in us, its just a matter of finding it. I am thankful that these authors understand the importance of that lesson and are so willing to share their stories. This book is one that truly makes a great gift for anyone, but, really, I think it is a great gift to give yourself.

This book is a nice piece for self-reflection as a father, mentor, man, human. If you find inspiration from reading others' stories, these are some nice ones. If you want a frame of reference to define your own idea of what it means to be a good father, son, husband, or worker this book is for you. It's tough to be cool discussing showing up for the people in your life or taking care of your responsibilities.

Men are much more likely to talk about sports, girls, or money. This book gives men a jumping off point to think about or talk about their own experiences and how they relate to what is really important to them. It also gives hope to men who have gone off track that they can get their lives back together and live with meaning.

I love the idea that the writer s had for this book had but having countless men write a paragraph about their struggles from their perfect world doesn't show me much about what it means to be a good man. The book needed one write who gave examples of what he thought makes a good man. I do think that young men often fatherless need examples of what makes a good man but I think this book tried to be everything to everyone who wanted to be involved.

I hope someone, someday will try this again but tis book is just a mess of one paragraph stories, some of which have litle to do with being a man at all,. I like the concept behind this but I was a little disappointed.

The essays are very brief and seem a little choppy to me. I enjoyed some of them but, there seems to almost be a thread of anti-masculinity running though them -- perhaps in response to violent experiences that many of the authors had come out of. Our culture seems to be so confused that men do not wish to be effeminate are forced to be violent -- because there is no middle ground. Can't we embrace those qualities that distinguish us as men without our becoming dangerous individuals?

He took a lawless culture that was overrun by inequality and greed for one where men "live on equal terms one with another, and with equal incomes, striving only to surpass each other in courage and virtue. He was so successful in transforming this society that "the whole city of Sparta was regarded as a school and example of orderly public life and of settled political institutions. Though the roles of men and women were distinctly defined, it was said that only in Sparta do the women act like men with reference to their freedom and role in the household.

Admittedly, there were some downsides. For one, the culture focused on war. But then again, Lycurgus was a man who valued peace and this culture, valuing courage and virtue, had little need to go to war.

Consider a primary motive in modern wars and you'll understand this. If a culture does not seek luxury they have no need possess the natural resources of others -- can anyone say "oil? Just keep in mind, this culture existed around BC -- we should expect them to have a few issues. I guess what I'm saying is I would love to see a culture of modern men who embrace their masculinity and exchange materialism for a culture of bravery and virtue.

Is that in any way threatening to women? Is that in any way a danger to our nation? The book just didn't have what I hoped it would. Fast shipping, good product. The Good Men Project

The Good Men Project was founded in by Charlotte Startin and Jessica Sakey as a way to allow men to tell stories about the defining moments in their lives. The Good Men Project: Real Stories from the Front Lines of Modern Manhood is a collection of 31 essays written by a broad range of contributors including not just well-known writers, but also a former Sing Sing inmate, a father of five watching his wife die from cancer, a soldier just back from Iraq, and a host of ordinary men willing to share their everyday struggles to define themselves as men in the twenty-first century. The film of the same title is directed and produced by Matt Gannon, maker of the feature documentary In the Crease and co-producer of the Oscar-nominated Girl with a Pearl Earring. The film presents the stories of ten men from varied backgrounds who share the moments in their lives that made them who they are.

How Did the Good Men Project Get Hijacked By Such Bad Guys?

Blog: What were your initial goals for this project and how have they changed or evolved over time? Lisa Hickey: Our initial goal for the project was very simple: It was simply to start a conversation about what it means to be a good man. Those moments where they really have to make these choices and think about what is good, what does this mean to me as both a man and a good man. That was the very simple idea that drove everything forward. Part of the secondary goal was we felt that the way men are portrayed in the media these days is often not very positive. Men are depicted as cheaters, villains or couch potatoes, or dumb idiots who only want to talk about sex and sports. We embrace that.

Boys to Men: Teaching and Learning About Masculinity in an Age of Change

Through their web page and social media channels , The Good Men project is creating a space for a much-needed cultural conversation about manhood. What started as a quest for stories of the defining moment in men's life became a book, a film and a series of events which then sparked an international conversation about what it means to be a good man in the 21st century. Over the years, The Good Men Project has grown into a diverse, multi-faceted media company and an idea-based social platform. We write about fatherhood, family, sex, ethics, war, gender, politics, sports, pornography, and ageing.

Men in the Man Box top quintile are 20 times more likely to sexually harass a woman, six times more likely to use physical violence and more than twice as likely to experience suicidal thoughts.

Although I enjoyed some GMP articles and found them insightful and helpful, I had not thoroughly engaged with the magazine or its community. I knew nothing of the history of the organization, or of the discussions happening at and around GMP concerning rape — discussions that contribute to a perception of rape that blames the victim rather than the rapist, and therefore perpetuate rape culture. PolicyMic writer Lauren Rankin brought these troubling facts about GMP to my attention, and I am grateful to her for it, both because she has educated me and because I can share what I have learned. However, in , things started to change.

INTERVIEW: Rewriting Masculinity with “The Good Men Project”

Lashlie, a lone parent, worried her way through her own son's difficult adolescence while working as the first female prison officer in a men's prison in New Zealand. There are two main pathways to prison, she believes: the basically good boy who does something stupid with tragic consequences such as drinking and driving , and those whose backgrounds give them little chance. In , Lashlie was effectively sacked from the New Zealand special education service for saying that some children are born on tramlines to prison.

What do they imagine is expected of them? Whom do they look up to, and how are they navigating the transition from being boys to becoming men? The past 50 years have redefined what it means to be female in America. Girls today are told that they can do anything, be anyone. To be a girl today is to be the beneficiary of decades of conversation about the complexities of womanhood, its many forms and expressions. Boys, though, have been left behind.
